How to manage the Paragraph and Line spacing?

The white spacing before and after the paragraph are called paragraph spacing. Similarly, the white space between adjacent lines is called line spacing. You can adjust the amount of space between consecutive lines and paragraphs in a document.

Perform the following steps to adjust the paragraph spacing:
  • First place the insertion point in a paragraph.
  • Select Paragraph from Format menu, a dialog box will appear with the title "Paragraph".

  • Click on  "Indents and Spacing" tab in the paragraph dialog box.
  • To specify amount of space before the selected paragraph, type a number in the "Before" box under Spacing section.
  • To specify amount of space after the selected paragraph, type a number in the "After" box under Spacing section.

Click Ok button to apply the settings.
Here you can specify the amount of space in inches, points, and centimeters.  For example, type 5pt to specify 5 points spacing or type 5cm to specify 5 centimeters spacing. The preview section of dialog box shows the effect of your selected spacing between the paragraphs.
To adjust the line spacing, following shortcut keys can also be used for line spacing in the paragraph.
  • Ctrl+1     used to set single line spacing.
  • Ctrl+2     used to set double line spacing.
  • Ctrl+5     used to set 1.5 line spacing.

Top 10 computer mouse tips everyone should know

Most computer users don't take full advantage of the computer Mouse. Below are computer mouse tips and secrets that help you get the full potential of your computer mouse and increase your overall productivity while on the computer. Shift key and mouse click
Many text editors and programs allow you to highlight all or portions of text using the Shift key and the mouse. For example, place the cursor at the beginning of a paragraph, hold down the Shift key and click at the end of the paragraph to highlight the full paragraph.
Take full advantage of the scroll wheel
Today, everyone is fully aware of a mouse wheels ability to scroll up and down on a page. However, this wheel can also do so much more, as shown below.
  • The mouse wheel is not just a wheel, it can also be used as a button. Pressing down on the wheel will act like a third mouse button. This can be used to open a web page in a tab by clicking the wheel on any link and can also be used to close a tab by clicking the wheel on any open tab.
  • Quickly Zoom in and Out on a web page, word document, excel spreadsheet, etc. by holding down the Ctrl key and scrolling up to zoom in and down to zoom out.
  • Move forward and backwards while browsing the Internet by holding down the Shift key and scrolling up and down. Scrolling down goes back and scrolling up goes forward.
Select with double and triple click
Any word can be easily selected by double-clicking the word. If you want to highlight the whole paragraph, click the mouse button three times on any text in the paragraph.
Use the right-click
Take full advantage of the right-click any time you highlight text or wish to view the properties of an object. For example, if you highlight a file or text, you can right-click that highlighted item copy it and then right-click anywhere else to paste it.
Tip If you right-click on any file or text and drag it while continuing to hold the right button, when you let go you will be given the option to move or copy that file or text. This saves you the extra step of having to right-click where you want to paste the item.
Tip While in a browser pressing and holding Ctrl while clicking on any link will open that link in a new tab.
Ctrl key and mouse click or highlight
While holding down the Ctrl key you can left-click to select multiple objects or highlight multiple sections of text. For example, in Microsoft Windows you could hold down the Ctrl key and click to select multiple files at once. If you wanted to highlight different parts of a paragraph or web page, you could also hold down the Ctrl key and select each section you wanted to copy.
Tip Mozilla Firefox users can also hold down the Ctrl key and individually click on each cell in a table they wish to copy or drag their mouse down a row to select just that row or text without selecting any of the other text in that table.
Use the mouse side buttons
Many new computer mice have buttons on the side of the mouse. These buttons can be programmed to do anything, however, by default the left-thumb button can be used to go back on a web page. This makes browsing the Internet more enjoyable since you do not need to move the mouse cursor to the browser back arrow button in order to go back a page.
Use the Windows Snap To feature
Take full advantage of the Windows mouse Snap To feature, which will automatically move your mouse to buttons that appear in a dialog box. For example, if you delete a file or close a window you may get a prompt asking you if you are sure you want to perform the task. With the Snap To feature enabled, the mouse cursor automatically moves to the Ok button, so all you will have to do is click the mouse button if you agree. This saves you the time of having to move the mouse cursor over to the Ok button and then click Ok. To enable this feature open the Mouse properties under the Windows Control Panel and check the Snap To check box under the Pointer Options tab.
Tip While changing this feature we also suggest looking at other available options in the Mouse settings. For example, increasing the Motion speed can also help increase your productivity while using the mouse.
Manage the open window with the mouse
Double-click the top title bar of any window to maximize a window or if it is already maximized resize it to a window. You can also double-click the icon for the window in the top-left corner of the window to close that window.
Move the mouse with your keyboard
Instead of using the mouse that came with your computer you can also enable Windows to use the number pad as a mouse.
Customize your mouse
Finally, if you have a mouse with more than two buttons, installing the included mouse software will allow you to customize the mouse even more. For example, if you don't use the side buttons to move back and forth in a web page change it to something you do more often, such as switching between open windows or opening the calculator.

5 Leadership Tips for 2012

With only a few days left until we usher in the New Year, you’re going to be bombarded with lists of things to do and not to do. Most of them will contain the same tired rhetoric from years past. These lists du jour will simply rehash and spin items from prior years while offering little new in the way of helpful thought. I wanted to give readers 5 key items to focus on if they’re serious about becoming better leaders in 2012 – my holiday gift to you.
There are lots of things I could have included on my list, so many will probably wonder how I chose the following 5 items. The following list contains the 5 items (6 including my bonus selection), which I’ve personally chosen to focus on (pursue) in the upcoming year:
  1. Family: I’m going to approach this topic a bit differently than many – If you’re struggling with the family balance thing my advice is simple: don’t attempt to balance your family – make them your priority. I’ve simply lived too long to buy into the myth that success in the workplace will create happiness at home. While it makes for a nice sound bite to console those with a guilty conscience, IT IS A LIE. If your business is growing, but your spouse is crying and your children are neglected, it’s time to do a reality check on your priorities. If your assistant respects you, but your spouse doesn’t you have serious issues that need your immediate attention. If you would rather spend time with your online “friends” than with your children, it’s time to pull the ripcord on your internet connection. Here’s the cold hard truth…if you cheat your family to invest into your career, you and your loved ones will pay a very heavy price. It is simply wrong to value your workplace commitments over your family commitments – moreover it’s not necessary. If your focus is on your family, your career won’t suffer, it will flourish. Get this wrong and not only will your family suffer, but so will you as you someday mourn the loss of what could have been, but cannot be recovered.
  2. White Space: While the mind of a leader may be most comfortable being oriented toward the future, he/she can only act in the here and now. The knowledge and skills required to master any endeavor only happens when we focus on what we’re currently doing. This is the definition of presence, and it is only when we operate in the present that real creativity, growth and innovation occur. The problem with being present is that many leaders confuse this with having to do everything themselves. Have you ever interacted with somone who deals with silence by jumping in and filling the conversational void? This same thing occurs with executives who attempt to fill every open slot on the calendar with activity – this is a huge mistake. Smart leaders don’t fill their calenders with useless activities, they strategically plan for white space allowing them to focus on highest and best use endeavors. Leading doesn’t always mean doing. In fact, most often times it means pulling back and creating white space so that others can do. This is true leadership that scales.
  3. Listening: Want to become a better leader? Stop talking and start listening. Being a leader should not be viewed as a license to increase the volume of rhetoric. Rather astute leaders know there is far more to be gained by surrendering the floor than by dominating it. In this age of instant communication everyone seems to be in such a rush to communicate what’s on their mind, they fail to realize the value of everything that can be gleaned from the minds of others. Show me a leader who doesn’t recognize the value of listening to others and I’ll show you a train-wreck in the making.
  4. Unlearning: I’ve believed for quite sometime the most profound and commonly overlooked aspect of learning is recognizing the necessity of unlearning. We’ve all acquired knowledge, beliefs or positions that but for the protection of our ego, would easily admit are outdated. I can think of no better definition for a closed mind than someone unwilling to change their opinions. Smart leaders recognize it’s much more valuable to step across mental lines in the sand than to draw them. Here’s the thing: No one has all the answers, so why even attempt to pretend that you do? Show me a person that never changes their mind, and I’ll show you a static thinker who has sentenced his mind to a prison of mediocrity and wasted potential. If the world is constantly changing, if the marketplace is always evolving, if the minds of others are continuously developing, how can you attempt to be unchanging and still be relevant? The smartest people I know are the most willing to change their minds. They don’t want to be right, they want the right outcome — they want to learn, grow, develop, and mature. Subjecting yourself to dissenting opinion allows you to refine your good ideas, weed out the bad ideas and acquire new ideas. Moreover, it’s the ability to evolve and to nuance thinking that leads to the change and innovation your organization needs to survive. Leaders and their ability to change their mind demonstrates humility, confidence and maturity. It makes them approachable, and it makes them human. People are looking for authentic, transparent leaders willing to sacrifice their ego in favor of right thinking.
  5. Engagement: Leadership isn’t about you – it’s about those whom you lead and serve. There are few things as limiting and frustrating as disconnected leaders. Smart leaders spend their time starting or advancing conversations, not avoiding or ending them. The more you engage others, the better leader you’ll become. It’s nearly impossible to engender the type of confidence, trust, and loyalty a leader must possess without being fully engaged. In person, over the phone, via email, through the social web, or even by sending a good old fashion thank you note – ENGAGE.
  6. * Bonus item – Read: There are few things which impact your thought life more than what you read. I’ve always been a voracious reader, and I plan to continue this pursuit in 2012. I read more than 70 books in 2011, and plan to read more than 100 books in 2012. To the person, the best leaders I know are prolific readers. My message today is a simple one – if you want to improve your station in life, as well as the lives around you – read more. The greatest leaders throughout history have been nothing short of relentless in their pursuit of knowledge. I believe Michelangelo said it best when he uttered the words “Ancora Imparo” which when translated from the Italian means “I am still learning.” By the way, his first public use of this phrase was noted to have been on his 87th Birthday. I don’t know about you, but I’m still learning (and unlearning). Moreover, the day I stop reading, the day I stop learning – that’s the day I stop leading, and likely the day I stop breathing.
Many will criticize my selections as not being comprehensive, or lacking certain elements they feel constitute a critical omission. That’s okay – it’s my list. That said, now’s your chance to get off the sidelines and add your contribution by sharing your thoughts in the comments below.

Robotic surgeons get open source boost

Summary: University of Washington’s upgraded robot, Raven II, will provide the first common research platform for campuses across the country.

Raven II Instrument (Credit: University of Washington)
The cost and complexity of commercial robot surgeons has meant slow penetration in the market and to only one player–Intuitive Surgical’s da Vinci.
But that could all change if researchers at the University of Washington (UW) carry out their plans to accelerate innovation in surgical robotics.
UW researchers will do final testing and then ship their latest version of robots named Ravens to five universities, including Harvard University, Johns Hopkins University, and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
The Raven II machines have more compact electronics and dexterous hands that can hold wristed surgical tools that are too difficult for surgeons to hold with their own hands. Using a display, a surgeon can look through Raven’s cameras and guide the instruments to perform a task such as suturing.
The software running the robots is interoperable with the Robot Operating System, a popular open source robotics code. Once installed at each campus, the Robots will be connected to each other via the Internet to allow for data sharing and collaboration.
“With everyone working on the same, open-source platform we can more easily share new developments and innovations,” said Blake Hannaford, a UW professor of electrical engineering.
The system, funded by the National Science Foundation, is not yet approved by the Food and Drug Administration, but is precise enough to support research on advanced robotic-surgery techniques, say the UW researchers.
“I see huge potential in surgical robotics for incorporating new instruments, more procedures, allowing for remote surgeries, and doing collaborative surgery between multiple surgeons in different locations,” said collaborator Dr. Thomas Lendvay, at Seattle Children’s Hospital. “Having everyone working on the same, open-source robot will help to make these happen more quickly.”
The short clip below illustrates the articulation of the instruments:

Monitoring Your Home with Security Cameras

It sounds like a little bit paranoia when we want to install security camera system inside and around our home. But actually, it becomes a necessity in this era when threats could appear out of nowhere. Security and surveillance camera system is very crucial to provide better security inside your home. It is also important to allow you monitor your home while you are away. As most of us are spending our days at office, we leave our kids at home alone or with their nanny. With home security cameras installed in strategic points, you can monitor your home and make sure that your kids are completely well secured. There are many bad stories about awful nannies that abuse the kids or even stealing things. Off course you don’t want that thing to happen. When you want to install security cameras inside your home, there are many factors you need to consider.

The first factor you need to consider is the space you want to cover. The numbers and sizes of room that you want to monitor will determine how many cameras you need to install. It is also highly related to the next factor; type of security cameras you need. There are many different types of security cameras especially security cameras CCTV that widely used for its reasonable price and user friendly operation. The type of camera depends on your surveillance needs. The camera resolution will determine the quality of image. Zooming and rotation capabilities would be a benefit to cover more space.
It is obvious that there’s no one would feel comfortable when they knew that they are monitored. That’s why hidden surveillance camera would be better options. There are various models of security cameras hidden on common shapes found inside home. Security camera system is supported with DVR to record particular time frames. The DVR security cameras should be suitable with the specs and numbers of camera used in the system. The higher resolution and more numbers of security cameras would require higher storage capacity. Back up capability using CD-R, DVD-R, or flash storage would give benefits to make sure there are enough storage space available.
One important thing from home security and surveillance system is remote capability. Don’t forget that you are monitoring from distance. Present models of security camera usually have IP camera capability allowing you to monitor your home through PC using internet protocols. Even advanced CCTV system could offer advanced features to access security camera system and monitor it real time using smartphone.

World's smallest microphone barely visible to naked eye

Summary: An Iranian researcher claims to have built the world’s smallest capacitor microphone, measuring just half a millimeter squared.

The relentless miniaturization of electronics is leaving no stone unturned. Microphones are the latest devices to join the league measured in microns.
Iran’s Babol Noshirvani University of Technology reports that one of its faculty members, Bahram Azizollah Ganji, has built a 0.5 mm squared capacitor microphone that can be used in building tiny and “invisible” hearing aids.
The device, which includes the same MEMs, or micro-electro-mechanical systems, approach as the microphones currently used in portable devices, could claim the world record. (PhysOrg.com reports that Bosch Sensortec GmbH has also made a microphone that is roughly the same size.)
While no specs have been revealed, the tiny microphone is described as highly sensitive, low-cost, with low power requirements.
Most of the microphones used in portable devices today, like hearing aids and smartphones, range from a few millimeters squared to the size of a watch battery. But demand for even smaller microphones is taking off as new potential applications are uncovered, including smartphones and Bluetooth headsets with better form factors.
Tiny microphones can also be used for medical purposes, such as next-generation hearing aids and always-on, non-intrusive heart monitors.
With a little imagination, there is no end to the opportunities for invisible microphones, including “smart” buildings, defense systems, and a bevy of spy gadgets like pens and watches.

How to Solve the Energy Crisis

  • A recent study from researchers at MIT underscores the major problems for the future of energy. With many of today’s methods not working, the study suggests ways to improve innovation for energy technology.
  • With some of the best ideas including tidal power and artificial photosynthesis, the future of energy technology clearly relies on innovation. A new study from researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) highlights how business strategies and investment policies could encourage energy-related innovation.
Students and faculty from nine departments assisted in the study, which was coordinated by MIT’s Industrial Performance Center. Their conclusion was startling: without radical social and economic changes, the world is unlikely to avoid the consequences of climate change or find a reliable, renewable energy source.
“We face a very big innovation challenge over the next few decades, bigger than most people recognize. And the system as a whole isn’t close to being up to the task,” said Richard Lester, the Japan Steel Industry Professor of Nuclear Science and Engineering at MIT. The study is the basis for a book, Unlocking Energy Innovation, coauthored by Lester and David Hart, a professor of public policy at George Mason University.
In the study, researchers noted four different phases of innovation technology. First, new technology is discovered and then prototypes are developed. Next, companies implement initial full-scale versions. In the final stage, technology already in commercial use is fine-tuned.
The researchers found that the two middle stages (developing prototypes and implementing the first full-scale versions) lack management and often become a “valley of death” for managing and funding innovation. To encourage growth at these and other stages, the researchers suggest fostering competition and requiring timely decisions on new concepts.
They also suggest a region-based system to encourage speed in innovation. “The federal government is structurally unable to play this role effectively,” Lester said. This method “would expand the scale of the energy-innovation system considerably, but reduce the federal role.”
With the energy shortage more apparent now than ever before, scientists and others in the energy industry must work to improve not only innovation but also how innovation is approached.
